A new piece of artwork is on display at the Bermuda Government London Office!

A View of Hamilton (1960) is an original watercolor by Alfred Birdsey, typical in its line and wash treatment, depicting the City of Hamilton from Harbour Road.

Alfred Birdsey (1912-1996) was Bermuda’s first modern artist, and is to date one of Bermuda’s best known artists. He was born in England in 1912 and moved to Bermuda in 1919.

Birdsey was a self-taught artist. His paintings are known for their abstract nature and unusual combination of Asian ink drawings and cubism.

Birdsey was also renowned for his fast pace in painting. Visitors to his studio on Stowe Hill in Paget would have souvenirs created for them in record timing. His daughter, Joanne Linberg, offers tours of his studio to this day.

He earned a living from his art alone. Outside of painting, he also worked in printmaking, woodcuts, and lithography.

Masterworks, Museum of Bermuda Art, held a retrospective exhibition of Birdsey’s work in 2023.
