Commons & Overseas Territories Speakers Conference

The 3rd Annual Commons & Overseas Territories Speakers Conference was held in Turks & Caicos from April 2-5, 2024. The Speaker of the House of Assembly, The Hon. Dennis Lister, attended alongside our UK Representative, Ms. Kimberley Durrant, and Clerk to the Legislator, Clerk Somner.

This year’s gathering of Speakers, Clerks, and Observers from the Overseas Territories and the UK House of Commons served as a testament to our shared conviction that unity makes us stronger. The conference aimed to continue our joint commitment to addressing the distinctive challenges faced by each of our territories. Together, the Speakers aimed to forge consensus on advancing these issues to the highest levels of authority for resolution.

As a unified conference, meaningful discussions were held on enhancing the security of our territories. The aim was to strengthen the protection of our islands by addressing both physical and cyber security challenges. The Hon. Dennis Lister took part in a compelling discussion on cybersecurity where he delivered a keynote address emphasizing cybersecurity’s importance of ensuring the safety of democracy.

Additionally, opportunities and challenges that parliamentary democracy faces in the realm of Artificial Intelligence were explored. Digital methods of communication were also scrutinized to ensure transparency in our democratic processes. This year’s conference significantly contributed to the development of an integrated and robust voice on the real issues impacting our territories and the people we represent.
